But if one can tear to pieces the work of a poet as one can the body of a god, one cannot kill her voice. from Edith Mora, "Sappho: The Story of a Poet", Flammarion, 1966
Are you posting this in the Trenches forum in order to get debate about it? I thought the Trenches forum was for debate and grievances.
Anyway, I agree with Indi that it's a rather drastic measure and I think can possibly quell the activity on the site. I understand the purpose of it but I don't think people can be forced to reply to other's pieces, though SOME sites do have a 2 comment minimum before members can post one of their own. I don't know how they enforce it unless they have an army of moderators.
The way to encourage posting by others to other's poems is for the Administrators and Moderators to make a habit of posting to other people's posts daily and abundantly (at least 5-10 posts a day). That keeps the heartbeat going at a website like this and helps the site stay alive. I know this for a fact because I've stopped posting at my own site during the past year or so and the site is dying. If I don't go back and post there and keep it alive and encourage my moderators to do the same, to reply to the posts of others, it will surely die. But anyway, this isn't about me.. It's only my experience on several sites that it takes activity from the owner and moderators to keep a site going as they wish it to go and that you can't force people to do anything they don't want to do and if you try, they'll just go away.
On a good note, perhaps this will be effective for people to post their poems to the Critique forum and get some feedback there, which is what the Critique forum was created for originally. See this thread from 2007 when the site was first formed. This is where Maree, the former owner decided to go ahead and create a Critique Form - viewtopic.php?f=21&t=1691 Maree decide to create the Critique Forum so that critique would be centered there and not so much in the Poetry Zone because she understood that many people who post on the net aren't interested in critique and don't like it.
So, hopefully the closing of original posts will prompt people to post the poems they want critiqued in the Critique forum. Unfortunately, though, every post is monitored prior to its appearance on the site in that forum which probably makes people very reluctant to post there in the first place. People want immediate interactivity on the internet. Moderating posts to meet certain criteria is stifling, at best, and people have to wait sometimes 24-48 hours for a decision to be made on whether their posts appear there or not and I'm sure there are many rejections of posts, also inhibiting participation at all.
At any rate, I hope the block of originating posts is lifted in short order rather than maintained for a very long time so that people can feel free to post what they want rather than being forced to reply to others they don't want to reply to.
But, I don't plan on spending much time here for a while unless the argumentative people (or person) can learn to control their rudeness, so basically, my opinion doesn't really matter.
LOL ... but thanks for asking.
I suggest this post be moved to Pipelines for a discussion rather than a debate, unless debate and argument is what you're asking for.
Are you a moderator here now? Just curious.
PS - LOVELY bird photo! What a fine photographer you are!
No. I'm not a moderator here. And I asked you if you deliberately posted this in the Trenches forum in order to get debate and stated that if you didn't want to debate, I SUGGEST it be moved to the Pipelines forum.
This site has always taken suggestions from its members. I'm just a member, a PERSON.. who is replying to your post and making a suggestion as a member of the site.
If I were a moderator and your answer to the question was that you didn't want debate, I would have moved the post myself. But I'm not. I'm just a participant.
AND.. since this is a site that welcomes the suggestions and ideas of participants and members, I didn't feel like I wasn't supposed to ask you whether you were looking for debate or not and I didn't feel I wasn't allowed to make any suggestions.
If you want debate, it's certainly posted in the correct forum. No doubt about it!
And you've received some feedback from a couple of members.
Maybe you're right and the Trenches forum is for discussion, too, not just debate. I may be wrong. I thought it was a debate forum or a "get it off your chest" forum, a spot for complaints, etc.
But what do I know? I don't work here and haven't claimed I did since I quit over a year ago.
You didn't make a mistake at all. I wasn't trying to be critical, Demerara Lady. I was just wondering whether you were looking for debate or not and making a suggestion (as a MEMBER), in case you weren't looking for debate.
The description of the forum says: "Rage, rail, tirade, harangue, sound off, bluster, spiel, or just generally piss & moan (at least semi-respectfully)" so that's why I thought the forum was about debate and grievances.
I hope members still have the right to express their opinions on the site. I think a lot of people like to express theirs. I'm glad you expressed your opinions. I was just expressing mine. As a MEMBER.
